Sarah Brightman - Resources

About Sarah Brightman

Sarah Brightman was born on August 14, 1960, to Paula and Grenville Brightman. In her early years, Brightman trained to be a dancer, taking lessons at her primary and secondary schools. Brightman was part of two dance troupes by the time she was 18; the first was Pan's People, and the second was Hot Gossip, which had a hit with the 1978 single "I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper." Brightman later went solo, releasing more singles.

Brightman had already acted in the play I And Albert in 1973, and she returned to the stage in 1981 when she secured the role of Jemima in the newly created Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats. She met Lloyd Webber, and the two wed in 1984. Sarah Brightman went on to act in his musicals until the two divorced in 1990. Other musicals Brightman acted in included Requiem and Lloyd Webber's adaptation of Phantom of the Opera, for which Lloyd Webber re-wrote the role of Christine Daaé for Brightman.

Sarah Brightman acted in Lloyd Webber's Aspects of Love after the two separated and then turned to the world of music. Brightman had previously released three albums during her marriage to Lloyd Webber that were largely operatic or classical themed. In 1992, Brightman released Signs of the Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, which put together songs she performed on her The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber tour. In 1993, Brightman released her first completely solo album, Dive, which debuted her transition to the operatic pop genre. Brightman reunited with Lloyd Webber in 1995 when they released the soundtrack album Surrender. Later in the year, Brightman released her second studio album, Fly.

Sarah Brightman started to find mainstream success outside the UK with the release of Time to Say Goodbye in 1996. The album reached #5 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers Chart and came in at #71 on the Billboard 200. Time to Say Goodbye has had five million copies sold since it was released. In 1998, Brightman released Eden and saw continued international success. Eden clocked in at #65 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the Billboard Top Classical Crossover albums chart. With La Luna (2000), Brightman briefly changed the composition of her albums, using pieces written by both classical and modern composers. La Luna reached #17 on the Billboard 200.

Taking a mix of previously released and new operatic arias, Brightman released Classics in 2001. The album did not fare as well internationally but still received a high grade from critics. Brightman's next album, Encore, followed much the same pattern and included two Brightman/Lloyd Webber collaborations. Brightman revamped her style with the 2003 release of Harem. Rather than just straight operatic pop, this album mixed that style with Middle Eastern and Indian influences. Harem peaked at #29 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the Top Classical Crossover albums chart. In 2005, Brightman released Love Changes Everything, which, like Surrender, compiled tracks from Lloyd Webber musicals.

Sarah Brightman's latest album is Symphony. The album continues Brightman's departure from a pure operatic pop style by incorporating Gothic influences into the music. Symphony has been one of Brightman's most internationally successful albums, including a #13 spot on the Billboard 200, the highest charting yet for a Brightman album. Sarah Brightman released her first Christmas album, A Winter Symphony, on November 4, 2008.
