The producers of Shrek The Musical kept alert for any portions of the show that didn't connect with audiences, and they were quick to make changes to Shrek that they felt were necessary. There will be a cast change for the part of Donkey and Dragon, in addition to re-working the original concept for Dragon before Shrek hits Broadway. In Seattle, audiences at Shrek The Musical had a lot of positive things to say about the sets, costumes, and the performances by Shrek (actor Brian d'Arcy James) and Fiona (actress Sutton Foster). The show is both visually appealing, entertaining and chock full of talented actors and actresses! When the show was first performed in Seattle, the main sticking points for crowds were the parts of Donkey and Dragon; the producers heard the complaints and have made changes for the Broadway debut of Shrek, which is a positive sign that Shrek the Musical is headed in a very right direction. Preview shows are going on in New York City at the Broadway Theatre in November, with the "official" opening of Shrek on Broadway being the 14th of December. Shrek has been a household name ever since Dreamworks put out the first computer animated film in 2001. Shrek was something we had never seen before: an unorthodox fairly tale that could be thoroughly enjoyed in two very different ways by young children and their parents. Parents loved that Shrek was a film they could bring their children to see while being entertained themselves! After the release of Shrek in theatres, the big lug of an ogre had earned his place in the hearts of America. Something about Shrek's humor combined with the overall message that "it isn't what you look like, but what is in your heart that counts" struck a chord in movie goers worldwide. Tickets for Shrek were incredibly hot items for weeks after its release in theatres and families couldn't get enough of Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, Lord Farquad, and the crazy cast of Fairy Tale Creatures. Shrek was such an unprecedented hit with movie-goers that a second film Shrek 2 immediately went into production and was released in 2004. The new Shrek movie was incredibly popular with prior Shrek fans. New characters such as Puss 'N Boots were introduced, and immediately became icons of the Shrek empire. The third movie Threk the Third was less well-loved by Shrek fans, in spite of record-breaking ticket sales at the box office. According to Yahoo!, Shrek the Third grossed $321,012,359, making it the second highest-grossing film at the box office that year, only barely beaten out for the title by Spider-Man 3. The third Shrek movie beat out other highly anticipated films that year including Transformers, Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End, and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (like Shrek, HP star Daniel Radcliffe is also hitting Broadway this fall in Equus).
In spite of mixed reviews about Shrek the Third, Dreamworks released a television special in late November 2007 called Shrek the Halls. This miniature installment in the Shrek series was watched by over 30 million viewers during its two airings, according to ABC Medianet. The television Shrek special took a stereotypically "Shrek" point of view on Christmas, providing Shrek fans with what they love about the franchise: a tongue-in-cheek, witty, and amusing take on a particular theme. A made-for-TV Christmas special hasn't slowed down the Shrek train yet, however! There is a fourth installment planned for the Shrek films called Shrek Goes Fourth. The fourth Shrek film is in pre-production and the projected release is in May 2010, making the official release of a Shrek film approximately once every three years since the original Shrek appeared in theatres. The ticket sales for the fourth Shrek film are anticipated to be very high, as there is still a loyal following for the series.
While Shrek Goes Fourth is in pre-production, Dreamworks decided to bring Shrek to the stage in a musical destined for the lights of Broadway. There have been rumors about a Shrek musical for years, but many people thought nothing would ever come of said rumors. Then, Shrek The Musical appeared in Seattle, Washington for a pre-Broadway preview. Previewing the Shrek musical in Seattle was a smart move, as the Broadway sensation Hairspray also previewed in Seattle before moving to New York City. Shrek tickets for the Seattle shows were incredibly hard to get during its one month run. Not only was this new incarnation of Shrek well-received by critics and audiences, the producers paid close attention to any audience criticism and have made changes to the production accordingly.
Shrek will be hitting NYC on November 8th for a month and a half of preview shows, before the official Broadway opening of Shrek The Musical on December 14th. Shrek tickets are on sale now for shows set on Broadway through September 2009! Shrek tickets make fantastic Christmas and birthday gifts for friends and family.
