Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark was one of the most anticipated musicals brought to the Broadway stage in the past decade, as the show brought together the musical talents of U2’s Bono and The Edge with the popular comic book superhero franchise. Although rock musicians and Broadway seem to be an unlikely match, both men signed on to the project with a plan to give famed Broadway composer Andrew Lloyd Webber "a little competition" in the world of musical composition.
From there, Bono and The Edge brought in famed The Lion King director Julie Taymor to the project. However, even with this all-star production team, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark almost never made it off the ground because of production delays and a massive production cost. Money was not the only problem faced by the show, as the complicated flying sequences and stunts caused several injuries to cast members, all of whom have since recovered.
After six delayed openings, 182 preview performances, and a $75 million production cost, which is the biggest in Broadway history, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark opened June 14, 2011. After overcoming every obstacle thrown its way, this musical has proven to be nothing short of a visual spectacle pulled together with a fantastic score and plot driven by one of America’s most beloved superheroes. The main plot of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark parallels that of the 2002 movie starring Tobey McGuire and Kirsten Dunst. Act I is the story of how an ordinary boy, Peter Parker, became extraordinary after developing spider-like superpowers and transforming himself into the superhero Spider-Man to protect the innocent from evil. Act II focuses on Peter’s internal struggle of how to balance his superhero life with his normal life while Spider-Man is needed across the city to stop the Green Goblin from genetically altering humans to create villains.
