Spring Awakening tells the story of teenagers Wendla, Melchior, and their friends who are growing up in Germany in 1891. Sexual education is taboo in their culture, so no one warns the young people about things like rape, teenage pregnancy, or abortion. Unfortunately, they learn the hard way and the play warns us that ignorance is dangerous.
This show includes adult themes that may not be appropriate for children. But with mature audiences, Spring Awakening is a huge success.
Frank Wedekind was born in 1864 in Hanover, Germany. In 1891, he shocked the public by writing his play Spring Awakening. Although Wedekind called his show a tragedy, most of his peers thought it was pornography, and authorities censored the play. The Spring Awakening plot tells the story of a group of teenagers as they experiment with desire. Without any sex education, the young people are ignorant about pregnancy and the facts of life. All of the girls have a crush on Melchior, a handsome young rebel. Wendla and Melchior are attracted to each other, but they try to restrain themselves.
A tragedy, the show deals with some intense subjects and issues of teenage sexuality. The play enjoyed a long run on Broadway and is a big hit today. So get your discount Spring Awakening tickets today!
