The St. Louis Cardinals have a long and storied history of winning with a total of 10 World Series Championships, which ranks them 2nd in Major League Baseball in titles only behind the 26 of the New York Yankees. Joining the National League in 1892, the St. Louis Cardinals began playing baseball under the moniker of the Browns, and for one year the Perfectos. The St. Louis Cardinals have retired the numbers of twelve different Cardinals including Bob Gibson (#45, two time Cy Young Award winner), Lou Brock (#20, six time All Star) and Dizzy Dean (#17, 1934 MVP). Also among those retired greats is the Wizard of Oz, Ozzie Smith, who is considered the greatest defensive shortstop in baseball history.
