The term Off-Broadway is often used to describe theatrical productions that take place in New York City's borough of Manhattan, but aren't big enough to make it into a Broadway theater. A theater that has less than 500 seats usually classifies as an Off-Broadway venue. Off-Broadway Productions can be either musicals or plays and are generally cheaper and lesser known than actual Broadway shows. Being less popular does not necessarily mean of lesser quality, as quite a number of Off-Broadway shows later make it to the bigger theaters. Some examples include Avenue Q, and A Chorus Line.
Off-Broadway often offers the opportunity for producers to think outside the box and create a performance that does not necessarily appeal to the mainstream. Current, popular Off-Broadway productions include Straight Up With A Twist, a one-man comedic show that takes place in the Players Theatre, and I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, which is playing at the Westside Theatre Upstairs. Off-Broadway tickets are certainly an affordable and unique alternative to sold out Broadway productions!
