The game will be played at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana on January 2, 2009 at 7:00pm. Due to the Southeastern Conference champion Florida Gators being selected for the 2009 BCS Championship, Alabama, as runner-up, was chosen to repesent the SEC in the game. 2009 will be the first trip to the Sugar Bowl for the Utes, and its second BCS Bowl game, after playing the Fiesta Bowl in 2005.
The Crimson Tide will come into the Sugar Bowl with a nearly undefeated season, having won every game except for the SEC Championship. The team's best game of the year was at the Iron Bowl on November 29 against the Auburn Tigers, where the Crimson Tide won 36-0. That game marked the reversal of Alabama's fortunes against rival Auburn, where they had lost the match-up for the six years previous. Other significant wins this season for Alabama included a 49-14 win against the Arkansas Razorbacks at Razorback Stadium on September 20, a decisive 35-0 blowout against the Arkansas State Red Wolves at the homecoming game on November 1, and a 32-7 win against rival Mississippi State Bulldogs on November 15.
The Utes, meanwhile, can boast a completely undefeated season this year. One of their best games year was against the San Diego State Aztecs on November 15 at Qualcomm Stadium, where the Utes routed the Aztecs 63-14. Other significant wins from this season included a 47 point win against fellow Utah school, the Utah State Aggies on September 13 and the 40-7 crushing of the Wyoming Cowboys. The Utes also enjoyed the reclaiming of boasting privledges against long-time rival Brigham Young University in a 48-24 win on November 22. Utah had not won against Brigham Young for two years. According to USA Today, Utah is the only non-BCS team to go to a BCS bowl twice, after winning the Fiesta Bowl three years ago.

The Sugar Bowl college football game is a Bowl Championship Series matchup that has been played since 1935. It is, along with the Orange Bowl and the Sun Bowl, the second oldest bowl game in the United States after the Rose Bowl. The game is typically the host to the Southeastern Conference champion, although for the 2009 game, it will host the conference's runner-up, as the Florida Gators were selected to attend the BCS Championship.
The game has been held at the Louisiana Superdome since 1976, except for 2006, where it was played at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia, because of damage done to the Superdome by Hurricane Katrina. It has been sponsored by Allstate since 2006.
