Summerfest was launched in 1989 by Henry W. Maier, who was mayor of Milwaukee at the time. Maier initially envisioned an ethnic-themed festival like Germany's Oktoberfest. However, the resulting event turned out to be a more generalized 10-day extravaganza. Since its inception Summerfest has entertained Summerfest ticket holders with an eclectic mix of comedy acts, rock bands and artists, country concerts, and more. Previous Summerfest lineups have included Bob Hope, George Carlin, The Doors, Santana, and Eric Clapton.
