Sunday in the Park with George is a musical based on the painting Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (1886) by French Impressionist painter Georges Seurat. Stephen Sondheim composed the music and lyrics for Sunday in the Park with George, and James Lapine wrote the book.
The first act of the play depicts the life of Georges Seurat as he is working on his painting Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte in 1884. Seurat becomes so absorbed in his work that the world passes him by, and even his lover leaves him, though she is pregnant with his child. In Act II, it is now 1984, and the focus is on Seurat's great-grandson, also named George. George struggles to make art, to connect with his great-grandfather the famous artist, and to find harmony in a chaotic world.
Sunday in the Park with George first opened on Broadway at the Booth Theatre on May 2, 1984, to mixed reviews from critics. Despite its shortcomings, Sunday in the Park with George was nominated for ten Tony Awards (of which it won two), won numerous Drama Desk Awards, the New York Drama Critic's Circle Award for Best Broadway Musical for the season 1983-1984, and the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama (the sixth production to be so honored). The original production of Sunday in the Park with George enjoyed a long run on Broadway and closed its doors after about 500 performances.
Nearly twenty years later, Sunday in the Park with George returned to Broadway, presented by the Roundabout Theatre Company at Studio 54. The revival of the musical was artfully remastered and included state-of-the-art technology to make the audience feel as though they were travelling through Seurat's paintings.
