About the Rays

Home Stadium: Tropicana Field

Opened:1998
Seating Capacity:31,042
Address:One Tropicana Drive
St. Petersburg, FL 33705

Established in 1998, the Tampa Bay Rays are one of the youngest teams in Major League Baseball. They got their start with a different name, logo, and team colors, before an overhaul in 2008 turned them into the team we know today. In spite of that, one thing has remained consistent: their home stadium, Tropicana Field, which the team has used since their inaugural season. The stadium, which is sometimes known as "The Trop," is located in St. Petersburg.

Although there were several notable moments in the Rays' early years — such as third baseman Wade Boggs becoming the first earn his 3,000th career hit with a home run — the team's rise to prominence wasn't an easy one. But that all changed in 2008, when the team had its first winning season. It was also during this year that the Rays won their first AL East championship, even beating out their rivals, the Boston Red Sox, for a coveted slot in the World Series. Two years later, in 2010, the Rays won a second AL East championship; since then, the team has qualified for the postseason as a wild card team in 2011 and 2013.

As the Rays gear up for a run at the 2014 World Series, the team will be lead by all-star players like pitcher David Price and third baseman Evan Longoria.
