Based on the classic fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, Walt Disney released an animated film called The Little Mermaid in 1989. Actors like Jodi Benson and Pat Carroll provided voices, and people sang along with "Sweet Child". In 2007, the stage adaptation of the movie opened at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in Denver, CO. Moving to New York City the following year, the musical debuted at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater with Sierra Boggess, Sherie Rene Scott, and Sean Palmer in the key roles. Today, the show is playing on Broadway along with The Lion King and Mary Poppins, and Little Mermaid tickets often sell quickly.
In The Little Mermaid plot, Ariel lives "Under the Sea" with her father, King Triton. When she falls in love with a human called Prince Eric, Ursula the sea witch offers to help the mergirl visit "The World Above". Triton's evil sister in the musical, Ursula wants to rule the kingdom with black magic and her minions, Flotsam and Jetsam the moray eels. Unless Prince Eric kisses Ariel within three days, the sea witch will steal her soul. Sebastian the Crab follows her to the palace, but Chef Louis wants to put him in the cook pot. Can friends like Scuttle the Seagull and Flounder the guppy help her find true love as a Disney princess before it's too late?
If you appreciate fairy tales such as Hansel & Gretel and Snow White, you will love TLM. With a book by Doug Wright and music by Alan Menken, songs like "Positoovity" feature lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater. Directed by Francesca Zambello and choreographed by Stephen Mear, the play includes costumes by Tatiana Noginova and scenery by George Tsypin. As popular as Aladdin and Pocahontas, the musical offers fun sea creatures, whimsical costumes, and tunes such as "Part of Your World". The cast will leave Broadway in August of 2009 to prepare for a National Tour, so act now to see the show in NYC.
