Moody Blues - History

The Moody Blues (sometimes affectionately referred to as "The Moodies") were formed out of the evolution of a British band called El Riot and the Rebels. In 1963, the group disbanded and former members Ray Thomas and Michael Pinder came together along with Denny Laine, Graeme Edge, and Clint Warwick to form a new group called the Krew Cats. The five performed together as the Moody Blues for the first time in May of 1964 in Birmingham, England.

The Moody Blues landed a contract with Decca Records less than six months later, and came out with their first single, "Steal Your Heart Away," in September of the same year. The song did not chart, but the Moody Blues' next single, "Go Now," climbed to the Number One position in England and reached Number 10 in the U.S. Unfortunately, the Moody Blues were not able to duplicate the success of "Go Now," and in 1966 Clint Warwick and Denny Laine left the group to be replaced by John Lodge and Justin Hayward.

In 1967, the reconstituted Moody Blues released their first full-length studio album, Days of Future Passed, which included the massively popular singles "Knights in White Satin" and "Tuesday Afternoon." The album stayed on the Billboard charts for over two years, and earned the Moody Blues international recognition. The follow-up album, In Search of the Lost Chord, was released in August of 1968, and was succeeded by the concept album, To Our Children's Children's Children (written as a celebration of the first moon landing), in 1969.

The Moody Blues came back with three more albums in the years that followed: A Question of Balance (1970), Every Good Boy Deserves Favour (1971), and Seventh Sojourn (1972), which included such hits as "I'm Just A Singer (in a Rock and Roll Band)" and "Isn't Life Strange." However, after the conclusion of their world tour of 1972, the Moody Blues took a break from touring and recording to pursue individual interests.

In 1978, the Moody Blues came back together and released the album Octave. It was wildly successful, and was followed by albums including Long Distance Voyager (1981), The Present (1983), Keys of the Kingdom (1991), and Strange Times (1999). Through over four decades of music, the Moody Blues have received numerous awards, including the Number One World Group Award of 1972, the Playboy Vocal Group of the Year Award, the Golden Ticket Award for selling over 100,000 tickets at Madison Square Garden, and eighteen platinum records.

Moody Blues - Facts

  • The name "Moody Blues" came about because the band planned on a sponsorship from the M&B Brewery. It is also a reference to the song "Mood Indigo" by Duke Ellington.
  • The series of compositions on Days of Future Passed (1967) was intended to depict a day from morning to night.
  • In 1993, astronaut Robert "Hoot" Gibson presented the Moody Blues with an audio cassette version of Days of Future Passed, which he had brought with him on all four of his space missions.
