Nathan Lane, of The Producers, Guys and Dolls, Catch Me If You Can, The Odd Couple and countless other Broadway and Off-Broadway productions, returns to the stage as Chauncey Miles. Written by Douglas Carter Beane, The Nance combines the drama of the theater with the finesse of burlesque dancing, mixing in humor and sorrow in this production held at Lincoln Center Theatre.
The Nance Plot Summary
Chauncey Miles is living a double life. By day, he leads a somewhat messy life. By night, he’s a nance. A term used in the world of 1930s burlesque, a nance is " a wildly popular character, a stereotypically camp homosexual man, most times played by a straight performer." Only Chauncey actually is gay. The Nance integrates burlesque sketches into the dramatic show as Chauncey navigates the underground, and sometimes dangerous, gay scene of 1930s New York.
