About The Nutcracker

The Nutcracker wasn't always a ballet. The Nutcracker ballet came years after the original concept was developed. Tchaikovsky composed the Nutcracker ballet based on a short story by E.T.A. Hoffmann called The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which was published (according to Wikipedia) in 1816, 76 years before the Nutcracker ballet began to sell tickets for grand performances. In the original story by Hoffmann, the little heroine for the story is named Marie (she is called "Clara" in most productions of the Nutcracker). Her adventures are with the Mouse King and the Nutcracker, though there is a significant portion of the story dedicated to Drosselmeyer telling Marie the story of Pricess Pirlipat, the Queen of the Mice (a powerful sorceress), and the Nutcracker. Princess Pirlipat refuses to marry the Nutcracker, after he saves her life from the Mouse Queen's magical curse, because he was too ugly. After the Nutcracker takes Marie into the doll kingdom and she sees wonders, she falls asleep in the Nutcracker's palace only to wake to the real world once again. Marie's parents forbid her to talk about her "dreams" anymore, even though she has the seven crowns of the seven-headed Mouse King to prove her adventures were real. According to the Wikipedia account of the end of the story, Marie vows to the toy nutcracker in her toy cabinet that she would never do what Princess Pirlipat had done, and she would love the Nutcracker regardless of his looks. There is a bang, Marie falls from her chair, and her mother tells her that her godfather Drosselmeyer is downstairs with his young nephew. The nephew is, of course, the disenchanted Nutcracker, made handsome and human again. The Nutcracker asks Marie to marry him, "she accepts, and in a year and a day he comes for her and takes her away to the Doll Kingdom, where she is crowned queen". This version of the Nutcracker is very similar to the show Nutcracker Fantasy, performed in Minneapolis, MN each year. Hoffmann's The Nutcracker and the Mouse King into a beautifully composed Nutcracker Ballet, he may have had no idea what a classic holiday staple his Nutcracker ballet would turn out to be! It took nearly 50 years for The Nutcracker ballet to reach the United States, but it remains a classic holiday tradition over 60 years after its introduction to United States audiences. The most notably difference between Hoffmann's original story and the version of The Nutcracker usually performed on stage is that the story of Princess Prilipat and the Mouse Queen is eliminated entirely from Tchaikovsky's adaptation. Further, many versions of the Nutcracker ballet end with Clara ("Marie" in Hoffmann's story) asleep with the Nutcracker toy cradled in her arms as the curtain closes, implying that the entire thing had been a dream. Other versions have her riding off with the Nutcracker in a flying sleigh before the curtain falls. Wikipedia notes, however, that "the 1985 Royal Ballet version…gives the impression that the 'dream' actually happens in reality, as in Hoffman's original story…since at the end, Drosselmeyer's nephew, who had really been transformed into a nutcracker, reappears in human form at the toymaker's shop."
