About The Police

Known for their distinctive sound, The Police made a living making music that would be different then what people had ever heard before. Since the bands formation, they were able to develop a following both in America and around the world that made The Police one of the most influential bands in history. Although the band disbanded in 1984, their legacy never died and in 2007 announced they would tour together once again to the delight of their fans. Drummer Stewart Copeland formed The Police with his friend Sting in 1977, originally with guitarist Henri Padovani who played some club dates with the band before he was replaced by Andy Summers. From the beginning, Copeland, Summers and Sting made it clear that they were going to follow their own rules when it came to everything about the band. Prior to ever putting out an album, the band was met with criticism in the UK after filming a chewing gum television commercial. Another unique move made by The Police was their contract with A&M records when rather then receive the standard large advance, they negotiated to receive a higher percentage of their royalties. The Police made many unorthodox moves, each of which worked towards their success as a band.

The first couple of albums by The Police were released to moderate success; Outlandos d'Amour (1978) reached #6 on the UK charts and #23 in the US. Their second album Regatta de Blanc (1979) topped out at #25 in the US, and became popular in the UK making it all the way to #1. They followed with the albums Zenyatta Mondatta (1980), Ghost in the Machine (1981) and their most successful album Synchronicity (1983) which reached #1 in both the US and the UK going eight times platinum.

The Police never officially broke up, but in 1984 each began to pursue other solo interests. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, OH on March 10, 2003 where they performed a few of their hits. They sang popular songs like "Roxanne", "Message in a Bottle" and "Every Breath You Take"; the latter was performed alongside Steven Tyler, John Mayer and Gwen Stefani.
