The musical tells the story of a once-successful Broadway producer, Max Bialystock, who has recently been down on his luck after a series of flops. After struggling to find money to finance any more of his shows, his accountant Leo Bloom discovers a way for Max to start making money again. While going through Bialystock's financial records, he discovers that the producer made more money than he spent on a show that closed in one day.
