Starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Vanessa Williams, The Trip to Bountiful started as a 1953 teleplay; it moved to Broadway later that year, and was revived in 2005 Off-Broadway. The new production, on Broadway, will be acclaimed actress Cicely Tyson’s first Broadway appearance since 1983, as Carrie, a widow who wants to go home. Cuba Gooding Jr. is Ludie, Carrie’s son; Vanessa Williams plays his wife; and Condola Rashad plays a young woman who befriends Carrie on her journey.
Carrie Watts is an elderly woman consumed with the dream of returning to her hometown of Bountiful, Texas. It’s a trip she yearns to make just one last time. But her overprotective son and his domineering wife won’t hear of her wishes. Against their wishes, Carrie, an aging widow, abandons the small Houston apartment and leaves her son and daughter-in-law behind.
