About Tina Turner

Tina Turner, born Anna Mae Bullock, was born on November 26, 1939, in Nutbush, Tennessee. Turner and her sister, Alline Bullock, were abandoned by their father and later on by their mother as well. Luckily, in 1956 the girls moved to St. Louis to be reunited with their mother. Shortly after moving to St. Louis, Tina Turner met Ike Turner, a roll and rock musician. Tina asked Ike Turner if she could sing for him and after much persistence, he agreed. During the 1960s, Tina Turner and Ike Turner became known as The Ike & Tina Turner Revue. In 1962, Tina Turner and Ike Turner married in Mexico.

The Ike & Tina Turner Revue became very successful throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Tickets for Tina and Ike's shows were hard to get during this time, as seeing them perform was all the rage. Tina Turner eventually left Ike Turner in 1978 because of his abusive behavior toward her. Ike and Tina's turbulent relationship is the stuff of legend. Unfortunately Turner went on to record several unsuccessful albums in the late 70's and early 80's. But she pushed through the hard times and in 1984 made what About.com calls "the most amazing comeback in rock music history." It was then that Tina released her fifth album, Private Dancer. The album turned out five top forty singles and three singles reached the top ten in the United States. That year, sales for Tina Turner tickets were through the roof! In 1985, Tina Turner won the Grammy for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Also in the same year, Turner teamed up with the likes of Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, and Dionne Warwick to record the best-selling charity song "We Are The World."

Throughout the years, Tina Turner has recorded numerous duets with other famous artists as well as made movie and television appearances. She undoubtedly lives on as a great rock icon. Since the release of Private Dancer in 1984, Tina Turner has recorded the following albums: Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), Break Every Rule (1986), Tina Live in Europe (1988), Foreign Affair (1989), Simply the Best (1991), What's Love Got to Do with It (1993), Wildest Dreams (1996), Twenty Four Seven (1999), VH1 Divas (1999), and All The Best (2004).

Additional Grammy Awards won by Tina Turner include Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group for "Proud Mary" in 1972, Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for "Better Be Good to Me" in 1985, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "What's Love Got to Do with It" in 1985, Record of the Year for What's Love Got to Do with It in 1985, Song of the Year for "What's Love Got to Do with It" in 1985, Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for "One Of The Living" in 1986, Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for "Back Where You Started" in 1987, Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for "Tina Live in Europe" in 1988, and Album of the Year (as featured artist for Herbie Hancock) for River: The Joni Letters in 2008.
