About Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Thomas Earl "Tom" Petty was born in Gainesville, Florida on October 20, 1950. Tom Petty became interested in music at the age of ten, when he met Elvis Presley, and knew that he wanted to be in a band at the age of fourteen, when he saw The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show. Tom Petty quit high school when he was seventeen in order to join the band Mudcrutch with future Heartbreakers Benmont Trench and Mike Campbell.

In 1970, the trio moved to Los Angeles in search of a recording contract, but disbanded soon after. Shelter Records offered Tom Petty a solo deal instead, which he hesitantly accepted. In 1975, Tom Petty reunited with Mike Campbell and Benmont Trench, along with new members Ron Blair and Stan Lynch, to form Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. The band released Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, their self-titled debut album in 1976. The album sold poorly until Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers went on tour in support of it in England. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers took off in the UK, and success soon followed in the United States.

The next album, You're Gonna Get It! (1978), was the band's first top forty hit, and their first album to go gold. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers came back from some severe record company problems in 1979 with Damn the Torpedoes, which soon went platinum. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' next several albums: Hard Promises (1981), Long After Dark (1982), Southern Accents (1985), and Let Me Up (I've Had Enough) (1987) were all very successful, and the band collaborated with artists like Stevie Nicks, Bob Dylan, and the Grateful Dead during this period.

Tom Petty briefly parted from the Heartbreakers from 1988 to 1991. He joined up with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne to form the Traveling Wilbury's, who recorded two albums, Traveling Wilbury's Vol. 1 and Traveling Wilbury's Vol. 3 in 1988 and 1990. Tom Petty also released his first solo album, Full Moon Fever, in 1989.

Tom Petty has remained active in the studio and on the road, producing Into the Great Wide Open in 1991, Wildflowers in 1994, Echo in 1999, The Last DJ in 2002, and Highway Companion in 2006. Most recently, Tom Petty delighted fans with his performance at Super Bowl XLII.
