Tony Bennett Biography

Singer Anthony Benedetto, better known by his stage name Tony Bennett was born on August 3, 1926 in the Astoria section of Queens, NY. Bennett began singing at an early age and became a somewhat established singer by age ten, due in part to his uncle, who had ties with the show business industry. Also a gifted drawer, Bennett attended New York’s School of Industrial Art until dropping out at age 16 to help support his family.

In 1944, Bennett was drafted into the army and received training to become an infantry rifleman. In March 1945, Bennett joined the frontline and dodged death in Germany on multiple occasions. After the war ended, Bennett stayed in Germany and was assigned to an informal Special Services band who’s job was to play for American serviceman.

After his discharge in 1946, Bennett studied music and theater in New York and performed wherever he could, even singing as a waiter. In 1949, Bennett was discovered by actress and singer Pearl Bailey, who asked him to open for her in Greenwich Village. Bob Hope, one of the members in the audience, saw potential in Bennett and decided to take him on the road.

In 1950, Bennett signed with Columbia Records. His first major hit was a remake on the 1940 song, “Because of You,” which had a ten week run on the Billboard chart. Throughout the fifties and early sixties, Bennett saw a large amount of success, but in the mid-sixties people’s musical interests switched from the pop genre that Bennett was known for, to rock. Bennett hit rock bottom in the late seventies when his then recently founded record label failed. Around the same time, Bennett also developed a drug addiction and was pursued by the IRS.

With help from his kids, Bennett moved back to New York, landed gigs at smaller arenas, and started a payment plan with the IRS. In 1986, Bennett resigned with Columbia Records and released The Art of Excellence, his first song to reach the charts since 1972. Since then, Bennett managed to revitalize his career, releasing albums, such as MTV Unplugged: Tony Bennett, Duets: An American Classic, and most recently, Cheek to Cheek, a collaboration album with Lady Gaga, which came out in 2014. In 2015, Tony Bennett performed in venues across the country with Lady Gaga.
