Trisha Yearwood began her career as a backing vocalist for Garth Brooks. After Brooks helped get her signed to MCA Records, Yearwood released her self-titled debut album in 1991. Though it was well received by fans, it was Yearwod's second album, Hearts in Armor that would first be "critically acclaimed." It was also the first of several albums that featured ballads.
Yearwood's third album, The Song Remembers When was the first to move toward a more contemporary style of music. The next year she released her first Christmas album, The Sweetest Gift. In 1997, Yearwood had her greatest success to date with the compilation album, (Songbook) A Collection of Hits. A set of top 10 singles from her first five years as a solo artist, the album received high praise by critics and a #1 spot on the country charts. It remains Yearwood's best-selling album to date.
