Velvet Revolver began innocently enough after former members of Guns N' Roses Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum reunited onstage for a jam session. They realized that even years after last playing together, their musical chemistry was still strong. The trio wanted to put together a new band and was on the hunt for a couple of new members. They didn't have to look long, as former Wasted Youth guitarist Dave Kushner and ex-Stone Temple Pilot lead singer Scott Weiland signed on. Under their new name of Velvet Revolver, the band signed with RCA Records in 2003 and began recording their debut CD.
Released in June of 2004, Contraband was well received by fans around the world. Going platinum two times, the Velvet Revolver debut album reached #1 on the Billboard Top 100 and the Canadian Album chart. Contraband featured two songs that topped the U.S. Mainstream Rock charts with "Slither" and "Fall to Pieces." The follow up album for Velvet Revolver was Libertad, which was released in July 2007. It peaked at #5 on the Billboard Top 100 and featured the hit single "She Builds Quick Machines."
As part of many Velvet Revolver concerts, the band is known for covering songs of other hit artists. They have covered the bands Guns N' Roses and Stone Temple Pilots, of course, as well as Aerosmith, Nirvana and Led Zeppelin.
