Written by David Ives, this play explores the nature of attraction as well as themes of dominance. The story is based on the 1870 novel of the same title written by Leopold Sacher-Masoch. The interplay of sex and power in the book came to be called sado-masochism, a play on the author’s last name. The Broadway production featured Hugh Dancy as a playwright and director as well as Nina Arianda as an aspiring actress. Venus in Fur Plot Summary

The show takes place in a rehearsal studio, where a playwright has been auditioning actresses for his stage adaptation of the novel Venus in Fur. He is devastated by the talent, or lack thereof, he has seen that day. Enter the second and only other character in the play, an aspiring actress who embodies everything our playwright hates. As they read through the play there are rapid costume changes and pauses for discussion as the two shift between the 21st century and the 19th century.
