Vince Gill - Resources

About Vince Gill

Vince Gill was born on April 12, 1957, in Norman, Oklahoma. From a young age, Gill's father J. Stanley Gill encouraged his son to play music. The young Vince Gill learned a number of instruments in his early years, including the banjo and guitar. By the time Gill had finished high school, he was already a very experienced musician and well known in the bluegrass community. During his school years, he played in bands with his friends, including Bluegrass Revue and Mountain Smoke. Vince Gill continued with bluegrass after high school, most prominently playing alongside Ricky Skaggs in his band Boone Creek.

Vince Gill gradually transitioned away from playing only bluegrass and moved into the mainstream country genre when he joined Pure Prairie League. After producing two albums with Pure Prairie League, Vince Gill signed with RCA as a solo artist. Gill's first three albums, Turn Me Loose, The Things That Matter, and The Way Back Home only met with meager success, though Gill had three top 10 singles. In 1989, Vince Gill moved to MCA and found a breakthrough success with When I Call Your Name, which came in at number 2 on the country chart and had two top five singles, "When I Call Your Name" and "Never Knew Lonely." Gill also recorded "Oklahoma Swing" with Reba McEntire. The album has since been certified double platinum.

Since 1989, Vince Gill has had a strong career under MCA. He again reached double platinum status with Pocket Full of Gold, and had his best success to date with I Still Believe in You. This album reached 5x platinum and for the first time, a Vince Gill album reached the top 10 in the Billboard 200. The album also spawned five singles, four of which reached number one on the country singles chart. Vince Gill's greatest mainstream success in terms of charting thus far was with When Love Finds You, which reached number six on the Billboard 200, and also continued a trend of multi-platinum albums. The albums since When Love Finds You have not met with as much success but have still drawn many sales, with three out of the last five albums reaching platinum and three albums charting in the top 20.

Over the years of his career, Vince Gill has worked with many colleagues in the music industry, including Rosanne Cash, Reba McEntire, Patty Loveless, Barbra Streisand, and Amy Grant. Vince Gill married Amy Grant in 2000 after becoming divorced from Jennifer Gill in 1998. Grant, a contemporary Christian music artist, and Gill often tour together.
