Violet, based off the short story "The Ugliest Pilgrim" by Doris Betts, was first performed in 1997 as an off-Broadway play at Playwrights Horizons. The play gets its title, Violet, from the main character of the original story. When it first debuted, the musical won both the Drama Critics' Circle Award and Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical. Violet is now breaking out onto the Broadway stage for the first time as a Roundabout Theatre Production at the American Airlines Theatre. The official opening night is on April 20, 2014; previews began March 28, 2014.
Violet revolves around the life of a young woman as she treks from North Carolina to Oklahoma in search of TV evangelist that she hopes can heal her facial disfigurement. As she embarks upon her bus trip half way across the country, she meets some eclectic people. She plays poker with her fellow riders and meets Flick, a young, black soldier who teaches her about embracing one's status as an outsider. Violet is a coming of age story that revolves around faith, love, and accepting one's own imperfections.
