The Washington Capitals joined the National Hockey League prior to the 1974 season as one of two new teams to join the league. In their inaugural season, the hockey fans in D.C. who bought Capitals tickets that season did not exactly get the high quality NHL play that they may have been anticipating. During the 80-game regular season, the Caps were only able to muster 8 total wins, while losing 67 and tying just 5. It would take eight years for the team to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but then became a post-season staple for the next 25 years, only missing the playoffs six times.
Since the NHL restructured its divisions in 1998, the Capitals have played as part of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference. Previously, they had played in multiple divisions, including the Atlantic Division, Patrick Division and Norris Division. As of 2009, the team had won their division crown four times, three of which was as part of the Southeast Division.
In 2004, Washington had the first pick in the NHL Entry Draft and used it to change their team history. They selected Russian Left Winger Alexander Ovechkin, and he nearly immediately took his pedestal as one of the greatest players in hockey and helped Capitals ticket sales grow to an all-time high. His rivalry with the Pittsburgh Penguins' Sidney Crosby has begun to help the NHL grow in the U.S., as more fans grow interested in the game of hockey. Averaging nearly 54 goals per season, Ovechkin will begin to break hockey records as his career for the Capitals continues.
His flash and charisma, as well as the teams exciting brand of play, has helped Washington Capitals tickets become one of the most sought after in the NHL. For NHL tickets to hockey games all season long, including Stanley Cup tickets, TicketNetwork is the only place to look for the seats that you want.
