The Washington Redskins have a storied history that dates back as far as 1932, when George Preston Marshall was awarded a football franchise that would play in Boston, Massachusetts. The team was named the Braves for the 1932 season as they played at Braves Field. When they moved to Boston’s Fenway Park the following season, the team name was changed to the more familiar Redskins. Even after winning the NFL’s Eastern division championship in 1936, fan excitement for the team in Boston was not there. So Marshall decided to move the team to Washington, D.C., and give fans in the nation’s capital a chance to fill the seats for NFL games.
After moving to D.C., the football team has changed ownership a few times and currently are owned by businessman Daniel Snyder. Since taking the reigns of the NFL team in 1999, Snyder has shown his knowledge of football and love for Redskins by constantly looking to improve its roster. He has spent more money on players than any other team during his tenure and is always looking to improve, a trait that the team's fans have grown to appreciate.
The Redskins' current starting quarterback this NFL season is the young Jason Campbell, who is entering only his fifth football season. He started all 16 games in 2008 and will be looking to build on his previous success. Coming into the new season, the Skins will have some of the best offensive weapons in all of professional football. Antwann Randle El and Santana Moss bolster the wide receivers, while Chris Cooley has proven to be one of the best tight ends in the NFL. The great wide receivers on the Redskins allow for lots of running room for the team's superstar running back Clinton Portis. With Pro Bowl fullback Mike Sellers blocking, Portis has put up big rushing stats year after year.
Not to be ignored is the bruising defense that head coach Jim Zorn puts on the field every NFL Sunday. In the 2008 NFL season, the team was one of the top-rated defenses in the league and through improvements this off-season, the defense could be even better. Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth joins the Redskins this season after having the best season of any defensive lineman in football last year. Middle linebacker London Fletcher, cornerbacks Carlos Rogers and DeAngelo Hall, as well as free safety Laron Landry are all back for another year and another shot at football's biggest prize, a Super Bowl ring.
Located in Landover, Maryland, FedEx Field plays home to every Redskins home game for each date on the NFL schedule. More than 90,000 fans fill the seats every Sunday and have helped make tickets to games in D.C. some of the hardest to find in football. If you want to buy tickets for games this season, look at the selection on Ticket Network.
