Like most teams in the National Basketball Association, the Washington Wizards have gone through different cities and multiple name changes in their team history. The franchise got its start as the Chicago Packers back in 1961, only to go through a name change the following year, known then as the Zephyrs. Again the team only kept its team name for one year, as they moved from Chicago to the east coast city of Baltimore, where they became known as the Baltimore Bullets. Now settled in Baltimore, the Bullets began to build their franchise up to championship level. The team used the NBA Draft to their tremendous benefit, when in consecutive years they selected two future Hall of Fame players.
In 1967, the Bullets selected guard Earl Monroe and then the following year selected big man Wes Unseld. With the addition of these two dynamic young players, the Baltimore Bullets were able to improve drastically, winning 57 games in 1968. Now that they had a core of young basketball players to build around, the franchise became a regular in the playoffs. In the midst of multiple winning seasons, the Bullets went through a couple more name changes.
They became known as the Capital Bullets in 1973, and once again, the name only stuck for one NBA season. The following year they changed their name again, now to the Washington Bullets, a name they would use for the next 23 seasons. Though the name changed, the talent on the roster did not. In 1974, the Bullets made a deep run in the playoffs after winning 60 games in the regular season. They ended up being defeated in the NBA Finals that year, but the season would go down as one of the best in franchise history. However, the 1977 Bullets season is the one that fans of the time will always remember. After winning only 47 games during the regular season, no one expected much in the playoffs. To everyone's surprise, the Washington Bullets advanced though the playoffs and captured their first NBA Championship, defeating the Seattle Supersonics in the NBA Finals.
Since the miracle title run, Washington has not been able to reach those heights. If they do, they will now do it under a different team name again. In 1997, to counteract the violent connotation of the name "Bullets," the team changed to the Washington Wizards. In recent seasons the team has begun to recapture their winning ways and have been exciting to watch for everyone who has Washington Wizards tickets. They currently play their home games at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., an arena they share with other pro teams (the Mystics of the WNBA and the Capitals of the NHL).
