While many would never connect pop music with the band Ween, the two are indelibly connected. The alternative rock group has never had a #1 hit or album, but they take all genres of music and crush them into something completely different. Their smart brand of satire puts silliness into rock & roll and pop music. While they have never achieved major commercial success, they have built a large underground fan base that help to sell out tickets to see Ween.
Ween was formed in 1984 when the founders of the band, Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo, met in eighth grade. They adopted their aliases Dean and Gene Ween when they were only 14 years old in New Hope, Pennsylvania. They immediately started recording and had many independent releases including Mrs. Slack, The Crucial Squeegie Lip, Axis: Bold as Boognish, and The Live Brain Wedgie.
In 1992, Ween signed their first major recording contract with Elektra Records. Unlike bands before them, Ween did not change their music to achieve commercial success. Their first album with Elektra, entitled Pure Guava, was one of their weirdest to date. Never adhering to norms of any genre of music, Ween consistently surprises even the most avid Ween fans. They have continued to release albums, and their latest is La Cucaracha (2007) which reached #69 on the Billboard 200 chart.
