Based on Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story opened in 1957 on Broadway. Although the dark subject shocked some people, critics praised Jerome Robbins' innovative choreography that told the story through movement. A review in TIME states, "When the rival gangs, the white Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks, dance their way through rumbles, murders and even a near rape, one rediscovers Robbins' extraordinary contribution to the American theater". Authur Laurents created the book, Leonard Bernstein composed the music, and Stephen Sondheim wrote the lyrics for the musical. Lasting for over seven hundred performances, the show inspired a 1961 movie starring Natalie Wood, as well as several stage productions.
West Side Story takes place on the streets of New York City during the the 1950s. Lt. Schrank and Sgt. Krupke of the local police force try to keep the peace, but the Jets and the Sharks want to rumble. Riff leads the Jets, an American gang, but his friend Tony wants to escape the streets by working at Doc's Drugstore. Meanwhile, Bernardo leads the Sharks, a Puerto Rican gang, and he tries to protect Maria, his sister, and Anita, his girlfriend. When Tony and Maria fall in love and kiss during a "Mambo" dance challenge, Bernardo is furious. With only four adult characters in the script, the musical is dominated by teenagers, and West Side Story music is intense and emotional. Doc, Officer Krupke, Lt. Schrank, and Glad Hand the dance chaperone try to provide guidance, but they don't understand what it feels like to be young, in love, and in the middle of a gang war.
Hundreds of years after William Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet, the theme of tragic love still resonates with audiences. Although Tony and Maria feel like "One Hand, One Heart", violence threatens to tear them apart. Directed by Arthur Laurents, the latest West Side Story revival opened in March of 2009 on Broadway. With a bilingual cast, the musical mixes English and Spanish, and Lin-Manuel Miranda translated the lyrics to songs like "I Feel Pretty". Reviews for this multi-cultural interpretation were positive, and people love the music, including "Jet Song", "Gee, Officer Krupke", and "Cool". The show broke records at the box office, and tickets are hard to find for every performance. Along with the current run in NYC, the producers are planning a National Tour that begins in the fall of 2010.
