About West Side Story Tickets

Based on Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story opened in 1957 on Broadway. Although the dark subject shocked some people, critics praised Jerome Robbins' innovative choreography. Arthur Laurents created the book, Leonard Bernstein composed the music, and Stephen Sondheim wrote the lyrics for the musical.

Directed by Arthur Laurents, the latest West Side Story revival opened in March of 2009 on Broadway. With a bilingual cast, the musical mixed English and Spanish, and Lin-Manuel Miranda translated the lyrics to songs like "I Feel Pretty." West Side Story Plot Summary

West Side Story takes place on the streets of New York City during the 1950s. Lt. Schrank and Sgt. Krupke of the local police force try to keep the peace, but the Jets and the Sharks want to rumble. Riff leads the Jets, an American gang, but his friend Tony wants to escape the streets by working at Doc's Drugstore. Meanwhile, Bernardo leads the Sharks, a Puerto Rican gang, and he tries to protect Maria, his sister, and Anita, his girlfriend. When Tony and Maria fall in love and kiss during a "Mambo" dance challenge, Bernardo is furious. Tony and Maria want to get married, but gang warfare threatens to destroy their happiness.
