In an article for Playbill, Andrew Gans reports that after Wicked celebrated a five-year run at the Gershwin Theatre in NYC, it added new members to the NYC cast of the show on November 10th, 2008. Marice Dodd is taking over for Kerry Ellis; Dodd played Elphaba in the Los Angeles Wicked production. When L. Frank Baum wrote The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, it is unlikely that he assumed his novel (thought by modern scholars to be a political allegory of politics and economics in the America of the 1800s) would become a color film and eventually inspire the creation of a novel that would spark a hit Broadway musical. Few stories have withstood the test of time as well as that of Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy's adventure in the land of Oz and down the yellow brick road is watched in its film form (The Wizard of Oz) by families as an annual tradition, with new younger viewers being introduced every year. Baum's classic tale inspired author Gregory Maguire to contemplate what the story behind the story might be, and reinterpreted the classic tale by writing Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The novel was a huge success. Not only did Maguire write a flawless piece with an entirely new perspective on Baum's classic, but he also challenged the readers' perceptions of what "good" and "evil" mean. The very thought provoking Wicked led to the creation of a Broadway musical. Any skeptics about the possibility of a novel-to-stage interpretation of the novel were blown away completely when they finally saw Wicked on Broadway. The musical had no problem capturing the attention of audiences and critics, and it continues to dazzle audiences five years after it opened.

Wicked is story of Elphaba, a green-skinned girl living in the land of Oz. She is feisty, but often misunderstood by the people she meets. The musical explores Elphaba's school-days unlikely friendship with Glinda, who happens to be both beautiful and popular. That they are polar opposites in every way is obvious from the beginning but as the girls grow up, their friendship becomes strained as their differences become more and more evident. Caught in political turmoil, Elphaba finds herself in several incidents that lead to her infamy as "The Wicked Witch of the West" and Glinda's popularity as "The Good Witch of the North." The musical moves through a series of dramatic interactions, leading up to a climactic conclusion that you don't want to miss. Wicked has it all: friendship, romance, political turmoil, and the possibility of a happy ending.

In 2004, Wicked took home three Tony Awards including Best Actress for Idina Menzal, who originated the role of Elphaba.
