Wilco - Star Wars

On July 16, 2016, Wilco released their ninth studio album, Star Wars. The album is Wilco’s second to be released under the band’s record label, dBpm. Unlike most albums, Star Wars was released online for free via Wilco’s official website. A CD version of Star Wars was released a month later, and a vinyl version hit shelves in October 2015.

In the album’s support, Wilco announced a world tour that would make stops across Europe and the United States. The tour’s American leg kicks off on January 25, 2016 in Pittsburg, PA. Stopping in several cities in the Eastern United States, including Atlanta, Boston, New Haven, Burlington, and Brooklyn, the tour will wrap up in Roanoke, VA on February 13. Wilco Biography

Wilco was formed in 1994 after its forerunner Uncle Tupelo disbanded due to disagreements between its leaders. Former members Jeff Tweedy, John Stirratt, Ken Coomer, and Max Johnston reorganized to form a new band along with Brian Henneman. Wilco was signed to Reprise Records in 1995 and released their first album, A.M., in March of that year. It sold about 150,000 copies and peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Heatseeker's chart. Wilco's next album, Being There, was released in October 1996. A gold album, it reached number 73 on the charts. At this time, the band faced some changes; violinist Max Johnston left, and steel guitarist Bob Egan joined the band.

Heading back to the studio, Wilco joined up with English musician Billy Bragg to collaborate on a set of albums, Mermaid Avenue and Mermaid Avenue Vol. II. Mermaid Avenue sold more than 277,000 copies and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Set to lyrics written by folk legend Woody Guthrie, Wilco and Bragg wrote contemporary music over two albums. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot has been Wilco's best-selling album to date, with over 590,000 copies sold. It was named one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time by Rolling Stone Magazine and the production was documented in the film I Am Trying to Break Your Heart.

The next few albums released by Wilco were all very successful for the band. Their album, Sky Blue Sky, sold over 87,000 copies just in its first week. The album peaked in the top five on the album charts in the United States and was a top forty hit in seven other countries. Sky Blue Sky was also nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Rock Album. The band's album, Wilco (The Album), was a hit, reaching number four on the Billboard 200.

In July 2015, Wilco released their ninth studio album, Star Wars. In the album’s support, Wilco will embark on a tour in January 2016.
