About Wilco

Wilco was formed in 1994 after its forerunner Uncle Tupelo disbanded due to disagreements between its leaders. Former members Jeff Tweedy, John Stirratt, Ken Coomer, and Max Johnston reorganized to form a new band along with Brian Henneman. Wilco was signed to Reprise Records in 1995 and released their first album, A.M., in March of that year. It sold about 150,000 copies and peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Heatseeker's chart. Wilco's next album, Being There, was released in October 1996. A gold album, it reached number 73 on the charts. At this time, the band faced some changes. Violinist Max Johnston left, and steel guitarist Bob Egan joined the band.

Heading back to the studio, Wilco joined up with English musician Billy Bragg to collaborate on a set of albums, Mermaid Avenue and Mermaid Avenue Vol. II. Mermaid Avenue sold more than 277,000 copies and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Set to lyrics written by folk legend Woody Guthrie, Wilco and Bragg wrote contemporary music over two albums. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot has been Wilco's best selling album to date, with over 590,000 copies sold. It was named one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time by Rolling Stone Magazine and the production was documented in a film I Am Trying to Break Your Heart.

The next few albums released by Wilco were all very successful for the band. In 2005 they earned two Grammys for Best Alternative Music Album and Best Recording Package for A Ghost is Born. Their previous album, Sky Blue Sky, sold over 87,000 copies just in its first week. The album peaked in the top five on the album charts in the United States and was a top forty hit in seven other countries. Sky Blue Sky has also been nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Rock Album. The band's latest album, Wilco (The Album), has been a hit, reaching number four on the Billboard 200.
