Willie Nelson was born April 30, 1933 in the small farm town of Abbott, Texas. While he and his sister were raised by their grandparents, Nelson developed a fascination with music by the young age of four. He performed songs for his local church and within just a few years he had already written his first song. Music is an important part in the life of Willie Nelson, including his years as a young adult. After high school and a short stint in the Air Force, he began to work as a DJ at multiple radio stations. Willie Nelson used his experience listening to music to refine his skills as a songwriter, a skill he has since mastered.
It was 1960 when Willie Nelson at the age 27 signed his first recording contract and moved to the music city, Nashville, Tenn. Two years later he scored his first single to reach the charts 'Willingly' (1962) and his second single that same year 'Touch Me' (1962) reached as high as #7 on the charts. During the next 13 years, Willie Nelson struggled to maintain that same success. In that time period he did not have any singles reach high on the top 40 charts and he became frustrated with his record label at the time; it was time for him to make some changes. He moved backed to Texas, dumped the suits and short hair he had been wearing and starting growing his hair out, wearing jeans and his trademark bandana. Willie Nelson saw his move back to the lone star state as an opportunity to change his image and sound. In 1973 he released 'Shotgun Willie' which had a more rock and folk music sound then any of his previous releases. While the album did not sell well, Willie Nelson began to see a cult following of fans who loved his music. He hit huge commercial success in 1975 with the release of his concept album 'Red Headed Stranger'. The album was made successful by in part the Nelson's cover of 'Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain' which was originally performed by Roy Acuff.
Willie Nelson began his career in acting when he starred in the 1979 Robert Redford film 'The Electric Horseman'. He followed that up the following year starring in 'Honeysuckle Rose', a film that produced the hit song 'On the Road Again' which became one of his trademark songs. Other movies to his credit include 'Barbarosa' (1982), 'Songwriter' (1984), 'Wag the Dog' (1997) and 'The Dukes of Hazzard' (2005). Along with his many roles in movies, Willie Nelson has also appeared on multiple television shows and has made many cameos as well.
Now nearly 50 years into a great career and with over 100 albums under his belt, Willie Nelson is considered one of the greatest songwriters of all time and a pop culture icon. In 2007, Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream paid him tribute by naming one of their flavors 'Willie Nelson's Country Peach Cobbler'. Inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1993, Willie Nelson has not slowed down. He is still touring and may be coming to location near you!
