In 1900, children's author L. Frank Baum wrote a book called The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The heroine, a young girl named Dorothy, lives on a Kansas farm with her dog Toto, Auntie Em, Uncle Henry, and farm hands Hunk and Zeke. But after a tornado brings Dorothy and Toto to Oz, she finds a magical world. When the Wicked Witch says "I'll get you my pretty... and your little dog too!" Dorothy knows she's not in Kansas anymore. Along with the Tin Man, the Lion, and the Scarecrow, she sets off for the Emerald City to find a way home.
In 1939, MGM released The Wizard of Oz as a movie starring sixteen-year-old Judy Garland. The film used a new three-strip technology called Technicolor. The images are in black and white for the Kansas scenes, but in Oz the screen lights up with Technicolor. In 1978, Motown Productions and Universal Pictures produced The Wiz, which featured stars like Diana Ross and Michael Jackson.
