The WWE is the largest professional wrestling promotion in the world. Encompassing the brands WWE: Raw, WWE: Smackdown!, and WWE: Extreme Championship Wrestling, over the years WWE wrestling has become the premiere professional wrestling brand. Founded as a purely regional wrestling brand in 1952 by Roderick "Jess" McMahon and Joseph Mondt, it was based in the Northeast United States as part of the National Wrestling Alliance. Eventually, the company came under the control of Vincent J. McMahon, Jess' son. The company split from the alliance in 1963 as a result of a dispute and was renamed the World Wide Wrestling Federation, and later the World Wrestling Federation. After buying the company from his father in 1980, Vincent K. McMahon aimed to make the brand nationally known, despite the tradition of a regional system. Throughout the years this has been done in several ways, via pay-per-view, video recordings, and most importantly, television.
The first television series, WWE: Raw, was created and first aired as WWF Monday Night Raw on January 11, 1993. It broke new ground in professional wrestling because it was filmed in front of a live audience, whereas other wrestling shows were often taped on sound stages and dubbed over. Over the years, WWE: Raw has been the Monday night wrestling show to watch, as the characters and storylines have gotten ever more twisted, exciting, and intense. Current wrestlers include national names like Triple H, Matt Hardy, The Miz, and Cody Rhodes. WWE: Smackdown! came on the scene in April 1999. Smackdown airs on Friday nights and includes The Undertaker, Chris Jericho, John Morrison, among others. The newest series is WWE: Extreme Championship Wrestling, or ECW. It began in June 2006, and is a revival of the original Extreme Championship Wrestling that ran from 1992 to 2001, and was bought by the WWE in 2003, according to their website. The ECW is slightly different from Raw and Smackdown in that the male performers are called "Extremists" instead of "Superstars," and the women are called "Vixens" instead of "Divas." Examples of ECW extremists include Mark Henry, Boogeyman, and Matt Striker.
In addition to its trio of weekly series, the WWE is responsible for the famous WrestleMania, one of the most well known professional wrestling events. Produced annually since 1985, WrestleMania is the championship that brings together all the WWE brands in a final showdown. Typically, two wrestlers will match up to win the championship title, but during the 2000 Wrestlemania, Triple H, The Rock, The Big Show, and Mick Foley faced each other in a "fatal four-way elimination match." The type of match is pre-determined and has ranged from a "no disqualification match" to a "steel cage match." WrestleMania has made stars of many of it participants, including Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, and The Rock. The championship has traditionally seen many celebrities attend in varying levels of participation.
