About Yaz

Yaz (or Yazoo, as they are called in the UK) is a synthpop duo consisting of Genevieve Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke. Vince Clarke, who had been the main songwriter for a group called Depeche Mode, decided to quit the group shortly after the release of their debut album, Speak and Spell, in 1981. Having responded to her ad for a "rootsy blues musician" in the Melody Maker, Clarke paired up with Alison Moyet, and Yaz was born.

Yaz released their debut single, "Only You," in 1982, and the song shot up the charts to peak at number two in the UK. The next single, "Don't Go," climbed to number three on the British charts and also received a lot of play on MTV in the United States due to the popularity of the music video. Yaz's debut album, Upstairs at Eric's, was also released in 1982 and was a great success. Upstairs at Eric's climbed to number two on the charts in the UK and broke into the Top 100 in the U.S.

Yaz toured briefly after the release of their first album and sold out of tickets for most of their shows. While on tour, Yaz released another single called "The Other Side of Love," which became their third straight hit. In July of 1983, Yaz released their second studio album, You and Me Both, which was their best charting album to date. You and Me Both peaked at number one on the British charts, where it remained for two weeks.

Unfortunately, the success of You and Me Both was curtailed by Yaz's impending breakup, which was announced shortly before the album's release. Alison Moyet went on to pursue a solo career and released several successful albums, including Alf (1984), Raindancing (1987), Hoodoo (1991), and Essex (1994). Vince Clark went on to form the band Erasure with Andy Bell, with whom he has continued working to this day. The duo have released thirteen studio albums to date, including The Innocents (1988), Chorus (1991), I Say I Say I Say (1994), Cowboy (1997), and most recently Light at the End of the World (2007).

In 1999, Mute Records released Only Yazoo - The Best of, which included the group's greatest hits and several remixes of their songs. This album brought Yaz back into the American consciousness and preceded the much-anticipated release of In Your Room, a four disc box set, released in May of 2008. In Your Room includes remastered versions of Yaz's first two albums, a disc full of B-sides and remixes, and a DVD full of interviews and music videos. Yaz also followed the release of In Your Room with the "Yazoo Reconnected Live" tour.
