Young Frankenstein, the musical, is based on the 1974 Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder film of the same name. Brooks considers Young Frankenstein his best film, so it was only natural for him to produce the show for Broadway. This version of the popular tale is actually a parody of the 1931 Frankenstein film, which was based on the original 1818 story of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.
Inspired by the tremendous success of his previous musical, The Producers (2001), Mel Brooks recruited Thomas Meehan once again to adapt Young Frankenstein for the stage. The pre-Broadway tryout of Young Frankenstein was held at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, WA in August of 2007. The production quickly found its legs, and opened for previews on Broadway on October 11, 2007. Young Frankenstein officially opened at the Hilton Theatre on November 8, 2007, and stars Roger Bart, Megan Mullally, Sutton Foster, and Shuler Hensley.
Young Frankenstein tells the story of Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced "Fronkensteen"), who is the grandson of the infamous mad scientist, Dr. Victor von Frankenstein. Frederick has inherited his grandfather's castle in Transylvania, complete with a hunchbacked assistant named Igor, a yodeling lab assistant named Inga, and a secret laboratory. Though he has vowed to distinguish himself from his grandfather, Frederick decides to continue his work (surely, what can go wrong?). The terror and comedy that ensue make Young Frankenstein tickets a rare prize indeed.
