One of the most pre-eminent blues-rock bands of our time, ZZ Top formed in 1969. The members originally started out as pieces of competing bands, with Dusty Hill and Frank Beard in American Blues and Billy Gibbons in Moving Sidewalks. According to All Music Guide, the band built their base with the first couple albums and by their third had gained the notice of blues fans everywhere, when Tres Hombres reached number eight on the Billboard 200. Tres Hombres also gave the band their first hit single, "La Grange," a song rated by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time. The trio continued the 1970s with a strong showing, bringing out hit singles such as "Tush," "I Thank You," and "Cheap Sunglasses." After going on their Wordwide Texas Tour, the group took some time off before getting back together.
ZZ Top started off the 1980s with a moderate success in the form of El Loco, but saw new heights of popularity with the 1983 release of Eliminator. The band's eighth album, it has been certified diamond by the RIAA, 4x platinum by the BPI, and diamond by the CRIA. It also peaked at number nine on the Billboard 200 and at number three on the UK Albums Chart. To this day, it is ZZ Top's best selling album. It spawned the hit singles "Gimme All Your Lovin'," "Sharp Dressed Man," and "Legs." The band came close to repeating the popularity of Eliminator with 1985's Afterburner. That album has sold over 5 million copies in the United States alone. It has also had a platinum certification in the U.K. and peaked at number four in the U.S. and number two in the U.K.
Though the albums following Afterburner have not sold as well as the two smash successes from the mid-1980s, the releases from the 1990s onward have been relatively good for ZZ Top. Albums such as 1990's Recycler and 1994's Antenna reached platinum status. The band's most recent albums, Rythymeen, XXX, and Mescalero, have produced several popular singles, such as "Pincushion," "Breakaway," and "What's Up With That." ZZ Top songs have recently been popular as covers by other artists, including a 2002 recording of "Sharp Dressed Man" by Brad Paisley and a 2008 performance of the same song by American Idol winner David Cook. Other ZZ Top songs covered include "Give Me All Your Lovin'" by Kym Mazelle and Jocelyn Brown and "Tush" by Kenny Chesney. In recent years, the trio has been touring heavily, with ZZ Top concert tickets going on sale for at least one tour a year.
