Auditorium Theatre - IL
Auditorium Theatre is a performing arts venue located inside of the Auditorium Building in Chicago. Designed by Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan, the Auditorium Building opened in 1889. When it opened, it was considered a state-of-the-art facility, which featured Auditorium Theatre, a luxury hotel, as well as office space. Proceeds from the hotel and offices helped fund performances at the theatre, which kept made ticket prices affordable to the general public.
Though this model worked for a time, by the early twentieth century, it was apparent that it was unsustainable. By 1941, the Auditorium Theatre went bankrupt and it was taken over by the city of Chicago, who used it as a WWII servicemen's building.
In 1946, Roosevelt University bought the building, which saved it from demolition, and twenty years later it was finally renovated and reopened with a gala performances of the New York City Ballet's production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream."
Today, Auditorium Theatre hosts over 200 performances per year and is the permanent home of the Joffrey Ballet. Make sure you get your tickets to see a show at the historic theatre.
