Built in 1925, the Richard Rogers Theatre located at 226 West 46th Street in New York NY, was originally named the 46th Street Theatre. The theater was the first to feature a democratic seating plan, meaning patrons entered through the same door regardless of where their seats were located. Prior to this theater, patrons who were seated in the balcony or mezzanine sections at a Broadway show were required to use separate entrances than those who were sitting in more expensive seats.
Although the theater went through numerous name changes throughout the 20th century, it was renamed the Richard Rodgers Theatre in 1990. To date, the Richard Rogers Theatre holds the record for being home to the greatest number of Tony Award-winning Best Musicals and Best Plays, with a total of ten. Now through early 2016, the Richard Rodgers Theatre is housing the popular musical Hamilton.
