Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, known professionally as Halsey, is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Her name is a reference to the Halsey Street station of the New York City Subway in Brooklyn, and is also an anagram of her first name. She was influenced by several musicians, such as The Notorious B.I.G., Slick Rick, 2Pac, Amy Winehouse, Kanye West, and The Weeknd. She claims that the band Panic! At the Disco is “the band that changed [her] fucking life” and credits Lady Gaga for giving her the strength to be herself. However, Halsey insists that she is the most inspired by cinema from directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Harmony Korine, and Larry Clark.

Early Life

Halsey was born on September 29, 1994, in Edison, New Jersey. Growing up, Halsey played the violin, viola, and cello until moving on to the acoustic guitar when she was fourteen years old. In 2012, she graduated from Warren Hills Regional High School in Washington, New Jersey. Following, she enrolled at the Rhode Island School of Design, but had to withdraw due to financial hardships.

Career Beginnings

Halsey began to gain attention from self-released music on social media platforms before being signed to Astralwerks in 2014. She toured with acts such as The Kooks and Imagine Dragons to promote her debut extended play (EP), Room 93. She especially rose to prominence with the song “Closer”, a collaboration with The Chainsmokers, which topped the charts in major music markets.

Badlands (2015) - Her debut album was released on August 28, 2015 by Astralwerks. Within the first two weeks, Badlands hit the number two spot on the Billboard 200. Additionally, the album went certified platinum by the RIAA. The most popular songs are they two singles “Ghost” and “New Americana”.

Hopeless Fountain Kingdom (2017) - The highly-anticiapted, second studio album was released by Halsey on June 2, 2017. The most popular song on the track list was the hit single “Now or Never”, and the album featured Quavo from Migos, Lauren Jauregui, and Cashmere Cat. At its peak, the album hit number 1 on the Billboard Top 200. Additionally, the album went certified platinum by the RIAA.

Personal Highlights

Halsey has been heavily involved in social activism, including suicide prevention awareness and sexual assault advocacy. Following a suicide attempt at seventeen years old, Halsey participated in the mental health and suicide prevention awareness campaign called “I’m Listening”, which was hosted by radio network Entercom and broadcasted live on September 10, 2017. On January 20, 2018, Halsey delivered a speech to more than 200,000 protestors at the Women’s March in New York City. Instead of a traditional speech, Halsey performed a five-minute poem titled “A Story Like Mine”, in which she told personal stories of sexual assault and violence throughout her life.
