About  Winnipeg Jets

Formerly known as the Atlanta Thrashers, the Winnipeg Jets franchise has relocated to hockey country and benefited greatly because of it. Winnipeg Jets season tickets first went on sale in 2011 and they sold out in just 17 minutes! But the original Winnipeg Jets team was one of the founding franchises in the World Hockey Association (WHA). The team was absorbed into the NHL when the WHA-NHL merger occurred in 1979. After 17 years playing in the NHL as the Winnipeg Jets, the franchise moved to Arizona and became the Phoenix Coyotes (now the Arizona Coyotes). The original Winnipeg Jets played their last game on April 28, 1996.

Then in 1997, the city of Atlanta was awarded an expansion team. The expansion team would become known as the Atlanta Thrashers and the Thrashers began play in the 1999-2000 season. During their twelve year tenure, the Thrashers only made it to the playoffs once and failed to ever win a single playoff game. Due to their poor performance, tickets were hard to sell and interest in the team slowly declined. In 2011, True North Sports & Entertainment bought the team and relocated the franchise to Winnipeg. The team was renamed after Winnipeg’s original WHA/NHL team and had their regular season debut on October 9th, 2011 at a sold-out MTS Center (now known as the Bell MTS Place). The Jets made their first Stanley Cup playoff appearance since relocating to Winnipeg in 2015. They were swept by the top-seeded Anaheim Ducks in the first round. In this most recent season, the Jets made their second playoff appearance since relocating. On April 11, 2018, the Jets won the first playoff game in the history of the Atlanta/Winnipeg franchise when they defeated the Minnesota Wild 3–2. The Jets ended up winning the series in five games – it was the first playoff series ever to be won in franchise history. The Jets continued to make franchise history by defeating the Nashville Predators in an intense 7 game series. Advancing to the Conference Finals, the Jets matched up with the Vegas Golden Knights. Unfortunately, the Jets playoff run ended when the Golden Knights beat the Predators five games to one.
