Gladys Knight & The Pips

In 1952, Gladys Knight won first place on the television talent show, Original Amateur Hour. A few months later when Gladys Knight was only eight years old, her family decided to create a music group called The Pips, which included her as well as her siblings and cousins. Once the group was solidified, the talent music group undoubtedly created some of the best music of its time. In 1961, the group released their first hit single entitled “Every Beat of My Heart” which made to the top of the R&B/Soul Chart as well as reached the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Soon enough, Gladys Knight & The Pips were earning Grammy nominations and awards left and right. In 1972, Gladys Knight & The Pips released their first Grammy-winning single "Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)" which skyrocketed on the charts. In 1973, their single “Midnight Train to Georgia” became a number one hit as well as earned them another Grammy Award. Several years later in 1987, “Love Overboard” became their last Grammy Award-winning hit before their disbandment in 1989.

Due to the longevity and success of their career, Gladys Knight & The Pips was not just another award-winning music group but was also inducted to the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.

Taking it Solo

While in the family music group, Gladys Knight did pursue other successful solo projects. This included the collaborative 1986 AIDS single “That’s What Friends Are For” where she was partnered with Elton John, Dionne Warwick, and Stevie Wonder. The single went on to become a mega-hit and won a Grammy Award, something that wasn’t unfamiliar to Gladys Knight as she now holds seven Grammy Awards as well as 22 nominations.
