Gwen Renee Stefani is an American singer, songwriter, and fashion designer. She is a co-founder and the lead vocalist of the band No Doubt that experienced major success after their breakthrough studio album Tragic Kingdom (1995) along with various successful singles, including “Just a Girl”, "Don’t Speak", “Hey Baby", and "It’s My Life”. Gwen Stefani was inspired by pop music from the 1980s.

Early Life

Gwen Stefani was born on October 3, 1969 in Fullerton, California, and raised in Anaheim, California. Her father, Dennis Stefani, worked as a Yamaha marketing executive while her mother, Patti nee Flynn, worked as an accountant before becoming a housewife. She has two younger siblings, Jill and Todd, and an older brother named Eric.

Career Beginnings

Gwen Stefani’s brother Eric invited her to provide vocals for his band No Doubt in 1986. By 1991, the band was sinned to Interscope Records, and released its self-titles debut album in 1992. However, the band was fairly unsuccessful due to the unpopularity of grunge music. Stefani provided guest vocals to “Saw Red” for Sublime.

Love. Angel. Music. Baby. (2004) - Designed to sound like a 1980s record, the album was influenced by artists such as the Cure, Depeche Mode, Cyndi Lauper, ad Madonna. Love. Angel. Music. Baby. Was met with generally positive reviews, and received a total of six Grammy Award nominations, including album of the year. At its peak, the album placed number five on the Billboard 200, and went certified platinum three times by the RIAA.

The Sweet Escape (2006) - The album musically resembles its predecessor, Love. Angel. Music. Body. While exploring more modern pop sounds. Due to its similarities to her previous album, The Sweet Escape received mixed reviews from critics. The song “Wind It Up”, which was one of the fan favorited hits, was written by both Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams. At its peak, the album reached the number 13 spot on Billboard’s Top Alternative Albums and the number three spot on the Billboard Top 200.

This is What the Truth Feels Like (2016) - Describing it as a breakup record, Stefani created songs with a sarcastic and dark humor vibe parallel with real, joyful, and happy music. The album received generally favorable reviews from critics, who praised its honest and vulnerable nature. One of the favorited songs was the opener “Misery”, which was an electropop song with future disco beats. One review from New York Daily News wrote that the song has unclear lyrics, which possibly represent Stefani’s former relationship with Rossdale or her current relationship with Blake Shelton. At its peak, the album reached the number two spot on Billboard’s Top Tastemaker Albums and the number one spot on the Billboard Top 200.

You Make It Feel Like Christmas (2017) - You Make It Feel Like Christmas features six original songs and six cover versions of Christmas standards. The album’s title track and lead single is a duet with Blake Shelton, which was the fan favorited song on the album. Critics gave generally good reviews on the album, but cited that some of the songs such as “When I Was a Little Girl” and “My Gift Is You” felt as if they did not belong on a Christmas album. At its peak, the album reached number 16 on the Billboard Top 200, and number one on Billboard’s Top 200.

Personal Highlights

In November 2015, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton of The Voice started dating, and have been ever since. Additionally, Stefani puts lots of efforts towards philanthropic acts of kindness. Following the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, Stefani donated $1 million and ran an auction fundraiser for Save the Children’s Japan Earthquake- Tsunami Children in Emergency Fund.
