History of the Band

Singer Dan Reynolds met drummer Andrew Tolman in 2008 at Brigham Young University in Utah. The duo needed more band members so they added guitarist Andrew Beck, bassist Dave Lemke, and pianist Aurora Florence to make the group a five-piece. The group named themselves Imagine Dragons in reference to an anagram that only the members of the band know. Imagine Dragons released an EP entitled Speak to Me shortly after their formation. Shortly after, Beck and Florence left the band and were replaced by Wayne Sermon and Brittany Tolman. Sermon was a guitarist who had graduated from Berklee College of Music and was a longtime friend of Tolman. Brittany Tolman was Andrew Tolman’s wife and provided vocals and piano for the group. The new five-piece began to play together at shows, still as Imagine Dragons. Bassist Lemke ended up leaving the group so Sermon recruited Ben McKee who was also a graduate of Berklee College of Music. The band moved to Las Vegas to record three EPs; Imagine Dragons (2010), Hell and Silence (2010), and It’s Time (2011). The Tolman couple left the group and were replaced by drummer Daniel Platzman and keyboardist Theresa Flaminio. Imagine Dragons signed with Interscope Records in November of 2011 and began working to produce new music.

Night Visions

Flaminio left the band shortly after they signed with Interscope, leaving Imagine Dragons as a four-piece. The band recorded and released two EPs in early 2012 called Continued Silence and Hear Me. Continued Silence peaked at number 40 on the Billboard 200 and contained a single called “It’s Time”. “It’s Time” peaked at number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the music video for the song earned a nomination for Best Rock Video at the MTV VMAs. That same year, Imagine Dragons recorded and released their debut album called Night Visions. Night Visions peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200 and has become certified double Platinum by the RIAA. The album also saw international success, making the top ten on charts in countries across the world. It was awarded a Billboard Music Award for Top Rock Album. “Radioactive” (feat. Kendrick Lamar) was the album’s second single and became a major hit. The track peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained on the chart for 87 weeks. It became certified Diamond by the RIAA and is the best-selling rock song on the Nielsen SoundScan running list of best-selling rock songs in digital history. “Radioactive” also earned a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year and won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance. Only a few bands could imagine experiencing the success that “Radioactive” had. The band embarked on their Night Visions Tour in Europe and North America in 2013, selling out multiple venues.

Smoke + Mirrors

At the end of the Night Visions Tour, Imagine Dragons announced they would be taking a break from performing live to work on recording new music. The band want to put their time and effort into their next album and did not want to release it until it was complete in their eyes. The second studio album for the band was called Smoke + Mirrors and was released on February 17, 2015. Singles for the album include “I Bet My Life”, “Gold”, “Shots”, and “Dream”. The album peaked at number 1 on the Billboard 200 and became certified Platinum by the RIAA. Imagine Dragons was now 2-0 for successful studio albums they had released. The band also went on a North American and European tour in promotion of the album. The tour ended in February 2016 in Amsterdam and once completed Imagine Dragons said they would be taking another hiatus from performing. Reynolds was quoted in an interview saying, “This is the year we’re going to actually take time off. We haven’t stopped in, like, six years, so we’ve forced ourselves to at least take a year off.” During that break Imagine Dragons appeared on the soundtrack for Me Before You and Suicide Squad. The track on the Suicide Squad soundtrack was called “Sucker for Pain” and featured Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Logic, Ty Dolla Sign, and X Ambassadors.

Evolve

One Feburary 1, 2017 Imagine Dragons released the lead single “Believer” for their next album. “Believer” reached number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became certified 5X Platinum by the RIAA.
