Summer - The Donna Summer Musical Tickets

Donna Summer, the Queen of Disco, revolutionized dance music in the 1970s, gets the jukebox bio-musical treatment courtesy of 'Jersey Boys' director Des McAnuff. Told through the dramatic lens of her final concert, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical presents the complexities and conflicts the famed songwriter and singer faced in her meteoric rise and descent. She was a girl from Boston with a voice from heaven, who shot through the stars from gospel choir to dance floor diva. But what the world didn’t know was how Donna Summer risked it all to break through barriers, becoming the icon of an era, and the supreme queen for every diva who followed.

This vibrant musical charts the incomparable life of Donna Summer and features more than 20 of Summer’s classic hits and electric dancing, all in tribute to the voice of a generation. “MacArthur Park." “Love to Love You Baby.” “I Feel Love." “On the Radio.”, “Bad Girls” and “Hot Stuff.” You don’t have to have been a denizen of Studio 54 to enjoy spending an evening in the company of that particular catalog of hits.

The musical tells the story of Donna Summer through three stages of her life with three different performers, from growing up in Boston to the legendary artist she became. Summer features three different actresses playing her at various points in her life—as a child, from a teen into her star years, and the veteran version that they label “Diva Donna,” looking back on her life. Diva Donna is the narrator for the evening, performing what she calls the "concert of a lifetime" as memories of her past selves flow by.

A life story rarely follows a clean arc, and rather than shoehorning Donna Summer's biography into the proper narrative shape, McAnuff and his collaborators have pieced together vignettes from her life to illuminate what they're claiming was her life's primary battle. And ironically enough — for a show created almost exclusively by men — that battle was the fight to reclaim her identity from a collection of controlling patriarchs.

In a statement-making directorial choice, the entire chorus of Summer is composed of women (playing both women and men at various points), while a group of five male cast members, introduced as "the men" by Diva Donna at the top of the show, are revealed in a menacing cluster. Over the course of the show, we meet her strict but loving father, her abusive lover Gunther, and her second husband Bruce Sudano.

From top to bottom, the production is all glitter, sparkle, afros, leather and animal print: a testament to the glamorous life of the legendary singer. Summer: The Donna Summer Musical is an apt apotheosis following 100 minutes of retro disco of the highest caliber.
