Rapper Rakim Mayers, better known by his stage name A$AP Rocky was born on October 3, 1988 in Harlem, NY. He was named after hip hop legend Rakim of the Eric B. & Rakim duo. When A$AP Rocky was 12 his father was incarcerated, and a year later his older brother was killed. Moving from homeless shelter to homeless shelter with his mother and sister, the family eventually relocated to Elmwood Park, NJ.

In 2007, A$AP Rocky joined A$AP Mob, a Harlem based group of music producers and rappers. Four years later, A$AP Rocky released his debut single “Peso,” which was quickly picked up by the popular New York hip hop station, Hot 97. That October, he released the mixtape Live. Love. ASAP, which led to him signing a $3 million record deal with RCA Records and Polo Grounds Music.

In 2013, A$AP Rocky released his debut album, Long. Live. ASAP, which spawned hits, such as “Goldie” and “F**kin’ Problems.” The record, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart received generally positive reviews from music critics. In March 2015, the album became certified gold by the RIAA.

Also in 2015, A$AP Rocky released his sophomore album, At. Long. Last. ASAP. Just like his first album, At. Long. Last. ASAP received generally positive reviews from critics and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. This fall, A$AP Rocky will hit the road alongside Tyler, The Creator for a tour that will span from the second half of September through the first half of October.
