Madonna Louise Ciccone Ritchie was born in Bay City, Michigan, on August 16, 1958. She convinced her father to allow her to take dance lessons when she was a little girl. After graduating high school, Madonna decided to move to New York City to pursue a career in dance instead of attending college. With only $35 in her pocket, she set out to chase her dreams. In New York Madonna met musician Dan Gilroy, with whom she formed her first rock band, the Breakfast Club, in 1979. In 1980, Madonna formed a band called Emmy with Stephen Bray, and the two caught the attention of Sire Records. Madonna signed a singles deal in 1982 and released her first song, "Everybody," on April 24 of that year. "Everybody" was an immediate success and received a lot of radio play. Madonna's next single, "Burning Up," which was released in March of 1983, also performed well on the charts.

In 1983, Sire Records released the album Madonna. This album peaked at #8 on the charts. Madonna's follow-up album, Like A Virgin, came out in 1984 and shot straight to the top of the charts. With the success of singles like "Material Girl," "Angel," "Dress You Up," and the title track, "Like A Virgin," Madonna quickly found herself at the forefront of the pop music scene and an icon for 1980's fashion. Madonna has been called the Queen of Pop and the Material Girl, in addition to being known as a music, fashion, and sex icon. She has sold over 200 million albums worldwide, starred in and produced blockbuster films, authored books for children and adults, and created her own clothing line. Madonna can do anything, and she sets an example as a strong, successful woman.

Madonna began appearing in films in the mid-1980's, including Vision Quest (1985), Desperately Seeking Susan (1985), and A Certain Sacrifice (1985). Soon she headed back to the studio for the release of her next albums, True Blue in 1986 and Like a Prayer in 1989. At the same time, she worked on the films Who's That Girl (1987) and Dick Tracy (1990). But that was not enough to keep Madonna occupied. In addition to her work in the studio and on film, Madonna began touring to bring her music to fans around the world. Fans bought so many Madonna tickets for the 1987 Who's That Girl World Tour that it became the highest grossing tour in history up to that point.

Madonna has shocked and delighted audiences through the years with a combination of catchy music, sexual films, and provocative live appearances. She has released 37 Top Ten hit singles and 12 multi-platinum albums over the course of her long and prosperous career. Some of the most famous Madonna songs include "Papa Don't Preach" (1986), "La Isla Bonita" (1987), "Like a Prayer" (1989), "Vogue" (1990), "Frozen" (1998), "Music" (2000), "Hung Up" (2005), and "4 Minutes" (2008). Madonna has also earned her fair share of awards over the years, including a Golden Globe, 7 Grammy Awards, and 4 VMAs.
